Fishtail Palm

Caryota mitis

PalmsModerateModeratetoxic to pets
Good to know: Named for its leaflets, ragged-edged and shaped like fishtail fins, which is unique among palms. Each stem flowers once from the top down over several years, then dies while new suckers carry on.

Through the year 🗓️

☀️ Summer now

Water and mist generously. This is its sprint season and it will drink more than you expect.

🍂 Fall

Slow the watering rhythm and stop feeding as light drops.

❄️ Winter

Keep soil lightly moist, boost humidity near heaters, and check weekly for spider mites.

🌱 Spring

Pot up root-bound clumps and resume monthly feeding as growth takes off.

The details

Light & placement

Light
Bright indirect with a little soft morning sun; fronds bleach in harsh midday sun
Ideal PPFD
200–400 µmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹
Grow-light distance
14–20 in below LED

Water & feed

Watering method
Keep-evenly-moist: water when the top inch dries. It drinks fast in good light and wilts dramatically if forgotten.
Fertilizer
Balanced feed at ½ strength, monthly in spring–summer.

Home & habit

Soil
Rich, moisture-retentive but draining mix (peat/coco + perlite); pH 6.0–6.5
Humidity
High (50–60%+); tips crisp quickly in dry air
Temperature
65–85 °F
Mature size
6–10 ft indoors
Repotting
Every 2 yrs in spring; it grows faster than most palms and roots fill pots quickly
Propagation
Division of basal suckers (it clumps) or seed; single stems die after flowering, so keep the clump.

When something looks wrong

Overwatering signs
Yellowing fronds, sour soil, blackening stem bases
Underwatering signs
Dramatic all-over wilt, crispy brown leaflet edges
Common pests
Spider mites (its chief tormentor), scale, mealybugs
Care notes: Keep it watered, humid and away from chewing pets. The oxalate-laden sap punishes both nibbling cats and bare-handed pruning. Dry air plus dry soil is the fast lane to spider mites and crispy fronds.

Common problems 🩺

The usual suspects when Fishtail Palm looks unhappy. Most houseplant trouble is watering or light, not disease — see all plant problems if you are not sure which plant is the culprit.

Browning frond tips

Likely cause
Dry air and mineral build-up.

What to do
Filtered water, humidity above 50%, and a flush of the pot every few months.

Sticky residue or webbing

Likely cause
Scale or spider mites.

What to do
Wipe the fronds down and treat with horticultural oil or neem weekly until clear.

Whole fronds yellowing

Likely cause
Overwatering, or a hungry plant late in the season.

What to do
Let the top inch dry, and feed monthly through spring and summer.
